Message from the Director
The Haemopoiesis Research Laboratory of the University of Crete School of Medicine is affiliated to the Haematology Department of the University Hospital of Heraklion. Our research is focused on the pathophysiology of Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes with special interest in chronic idiopathic neutropenia and Myelodysplastic Syndromes. We are also focused on the biologic characteristics and the interactions of Haemopoietic and Mesenchymal Stem Cells (HSCs and MSCs) in normal states and a variety of haematologic diseases and on the applications of MSCs in Regenerative Medicine. We have also established the Public Umbilical Cord Blood Bank of Crete. Our research has been funded by grants from EU (FP6 and FP7), Association for International Cancer Research (AICR, UK), Ministries of Education and Development of Hellas, University of Crete Research Secretariat and Pharmaceutical Companies.
